Dr. Rutkow does an excellent job chronicling the history and advances of surgery from ancient times to the modern era. His storytelling is excellent and very compelling – not always the case in medical history texts. He has sense of humor in the text (e.g., referring to surgeons as “scalpel wielders”). This is certainly not a military focused text, though very interesting and a valuable library addition for anyone interested in surgical specialties.
